< PreviousADVERTORIAL AN AFFAIR TO By Cassie Brucci Entertaining comes naturally to Susan Wilcox, co-founder and owner of The Herb Box. So it’s no surprise that each location features gorgeous private dining rooms, where her natural hospitality skills are fully displayed. Remember 202 3 EDITION 20 INARIZ ONA , C OUR TES Y OF THE HERB BO XADVERTORIAL USAN WILCOX WAS BORN TO ENTERTAIN. As the daughter of a frequent dinner party host, she learned all about the fine art of throwing a great party before she could legally obtain her driver’s license. Her genuine love for hosting and hospitality led her to a professional career as an events planner for art galleries and private events. “I love being the person behind the person, so they look really good,” says Wilcox. With food at the forefront of any significant event, catering was a natural progression. Wilcox co-founded The Herb Box in 1995 as an off-site catering business serving high-quality, organic food. As the company grew, so did the demand for a brick-and-mortar location. What followed was two locations: one in Old Town Scottsdale and another on Shea Boulevard. Each location has dedicated private event areas, something Wilcox incorporated by design. “People asked us to host catered events in our restaurants all the time, so we created space to do that,” says Wilcox. The Old Town Scottsdale location features one indoor dining room, while the Shea Boulevard location has two dining rooms with access to an 8,000- square-foot patio. All private dining room reservations include a dedicated event coordinator to help guests bring their ideas to life—from food and drink menus to playlists and decor. Because she is both a caterer and event planner, it was imperative to Wilcox that the event spaces went beyond aesthetics. “We wanted to create a layout that was comfortable and pretty, where people feel like they can relax,” she says. Each location offers a similar Southern Charm-meets-California Cool vibe, with mosaic tile, live succulents and tons of natural light. Although each room is event-ready, Wilcox empowers guests to tailor the space to fit their exact visions, including changing the furniture. No matter the request, “the answer is always yes,” says Wilcox. In the private dining rooms, guests can expect the same made-from-scratch food The Herb Box is known for. As one of the pioneers bringing organic, healthy cooking to the Valley, Wilcox prides herself on serving good- for-you food that also tastes good. The menu caters to various dietary preferences and primarily uses locally sourced ingredients. Specialties include butternut squash and corn enchiladas, a hearty vegetarian dish that will satisfy fervent meat-eaters, and a chimichurri beef tenderloin made with extra virgin olive oil and plenty of fresh herbs. Over the years, The Herb Box has hosted many notable names in TV, film and government, but Wilcox’s main pride comes from her regular customers, many of whom have become her close friends. She is honored when guests choose her restaurant as the background for any life event, no matter how big or small, and she makes it her mission to turn any occasion into a memorable affair. The Herb Box offers private dining rooms as well as complete-restaurant buyouts at both locations. These sprawling, privately-gated, lavish estate homes, developed by an award-winning development team, will be as majestic as the views they embrace. Silver Sky will be built on land once belonging to Arizona’s famed Cheney family. This cherished land, with its magical mountain vistas and brilliant sunsets, will be home to a select few who are looking to celebrate life surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the Sonoran Desert. “Staying true to the integrity of the land was foremost in our minds as we worked diligently to create an iconic destination in Paradise Valley,” says Silver Sky founder and developer partner, Gordon Berry. “For me, this is a dream come true. From an early age, I loved creating things. From the day we stepped foot onto this piece of land and saw the 360-degree views from Mummy Mountain to Four Peaks in the distance to the east, I knew we had to build something memorable here,” continues Berry. Silver Sky was conceived by the visionary luxury home development team of Gordon Berry, Heriberto Velasquez and Gilbert “Buzz” Silverman, leveraging over 50 years of combined experience. Behind this community is a select group of world- class architects, a best-in-class builder and luxury brand partners who will work closely with discerning clients to create homes unique to their lifestyle, interests and passions. “It is our hope that these sanctuaries will be a gathering place for family and friends to enjoy, and the foundation for generations to come,” says Velasquez. Silver Sky boasts architects, Mark Candelaria of Candelaria Design Associates, Stratton Andrews of Stratton Architects and an exclusive builder, Tim McCormac of Temac Development, Inc. Silver Sky sales will be represented by the founding partners of RETSY | Forbes Global Properties: Chris Morrison, Babbi Gabel, Shawna Warner and Kirk Linehan. Luxury cobranded partnerships are expected to be announced in the coming months. Bringing together this team was a natural step for a company rooted in purpose. “We find a lot of power in this hand-picked team,” says Berry. “The possibilities are truly amazing when you connect people that have the experience and passion for raising the bar.” “Shared vision for creating the most distinguished residential estate enclave was the main driver when choosing the team members,” says Velasquez. “Our experienced and phenomenal team is focused on the rare opportunity to create something really timeless and a legacy for each of our elite homeowners.” Two key collaborators are Mark Candelaria and Stratton Andrews. “Mark’s one, if not the most decorated architects in our market, and Stratton has been an award- winning architect for many years,” says Berry. “They both bring immense passion to their designs, and we’re excited to have them contribute and bring our client’s visions to life.” Candelaria brings over 40 years of experience to Silver Sky and is eager to share his experience with talented partners. “Candelaria Design Associates is very excited to be a part of creating the fabric and enhancing the beauty of this unique development,” says Candelaria. “We want to make the journey collaborative, creative and memorable for our clients and create a home that allows every turn to be filled with meaning, intention and beauty,” continued Candelaria. Also, Andrews looks forward to collaborating with a premiere group of talent to help clients create beautiful homes. “Stratton Architects is eager to help Silver Sky’s ultra-affluent clientele through every step of the process,” he says. “The expansive parcels create an open canvas for an architect with endless design opportunities.” S Inspired by rural European estates, the clean lines and soft limestone core of the home contrasts with modern glass galleries to highlight the coveted edge and contemporary influence. Copper roof details, manicured landscape and natural slate roof elements give this residence an abundance of texture and effortless, timeless charm. The sharp, negative edge pool creates a water feature from all sides and creates a backyard oasis. INARIZ ONA 25 202 3 EDITIONAdding to the team is Tim McCormac of Temac Development, Inc. “Tim has been in the industry for over 20 years,” says Berry. “He has built many custom estates in Paradise Valley and has experience working with the architects on our team. We knew he’d be a perfect fit.” As one of Arizona’s top general contractors, McCormac and his team bring true old world craftsmanship with cutting-edge execution to the community. “The level of homes we are building and developing at Silver Sky excites me most,” says McCormac. “Building the best is what we do.” These exceptional custom homes will maximize the outdoor living spaces to take advantage of the amazing Arizona climate and views. Culinary aficionados will enjoy the functional, yet innovative, chef and prep kitchens, multiple entertaining areas, al fresco dining, lavish landscaping and over-the-top bedrooms with opulent finishes. Wellness architecture is another focus including a state-of-the-art fitness center, spa, cold plunge and other health and beauty essentials. Guests will feel more than welcome with spacious, meticulously designed guest homes, attached and detached. And for car enthusiasts and collectors, the homes will have an exceptional spacious epic garage that will elevate car storage and display to new heights. Community and lifestyle are at the heart of Silver Sky, where sophisticated architecture and thoughtful design meet incomparable personal services. The team is selecting an elite group of nationally- recognized brands to enrich the lives of clients in a more meaningful and holistic way. “Our personalized signature homes will be built with our residents’ passions in mind, whether that’s hosting dinner parties, playing pickleball, collecting cars or enjoying the great Arizona outdoor lifestyle,” says Velasquez. “We’re thinking about everything a true aficionado needs to enhance their lives.” Beyond the homebuilding experience, owners will have access to a custom app, Front Row, offering complimentary 24/7 concierge services. From changing filters to ensuring a fully-stocked fridge before arriving home, Front Row will help with everything related to maintenance and home management. In addition to essential tasks, Front Row’s mission, positioned more like a members-only club, is to help make “members” lives easier and more fulfilling by helping them fulfill their passion. “We will help our clientele integrate into the community’s offerings they are interested in. Whether it’s art shows, golf clubs, charitable causes, access to exclusive events or even the right dog walker, we will serve our residents. Front Row is going to be a game-changer for our residents,” says Velasquez. “It will familiarize them with the community and serve as a guide for all things lifestyle related.” Paradise Valley can look forward to one of the most thoughtfully designed collections of signature residences, embracing environmental stewardship. RETSY | Forbes Global Properties will leverage Forbes’ global reach to introduce discerning buyers and real estate enthusiasts to Silver Sky’s innovative collection of showcase homes, as well as assist those who wish to create their own. “Silver Sky’s development and design teams have taken upscale living to new heights—some of the customizable options in these stunning homes have never been seen in luxury real estate,” says Chris Morrison, founding partner at RETSY | Forbes Global Properties. “Due to the scarcity of developable land in Paradise Valley, we see this as the best and last of its kind.” Currently undergoing design are four showcase homes that will range from 7,500 square feet to more than 14,000 square feet. Proposed pricing, availability and architectural designs are now in process. Be in the know. An early interest list is forming. Mark Candelaria, AIA, founder and principal of Scottsdale-based Candelaria Design Associates, is enjoying 40 years of inspired commercial and residential architecture. H IS PERSONAL STYLE IS RAT PACK TO RALPH LAUREN, he recently told another Valley publication. It’s a fine stogie in one hand and an Old Fashioned in the other, a bowtie and cowboy boots. All for fun, it’s reclining sideways on the fireplace mantel in one of his client’s custom homes. A gourmet chef, he cooks for his clients in their completed homes or in CDA’s showroom kitchen, where he and his daughter, Tiffany, the firm’s media director, host occasional cooking classes and produce a monthly podcast, “Inspiring Living with Mark Candelaria,” during which he chats with people about their careers and life stories. He’s also working on volume two of three coffee table books featuring a dozen pivotal projects, each paired with one of his recipes. The first volume will be available in January on Amazon and at other large book retailers and at local boutiques. Also, he has served as a board member of Habitat for Humanity and continues to volunteer on homes under construction. And, with the 20-member CDA team, he designs facilities for various charities and coordinates volunteer outings. The Candelaria Style is life fully lived. A friend and client, sports legend Jerry Colangelo, recently moved into the second of two Phoenix homes CDA has designed for him and his wife, Joan. “Mark has proven himself to be a quality architect and even better human being,” says Colangelo, who helped guide the Arizona Diamondbacks to the dramatic 2001 World Series victory over the New York Yankees. “I believe as a man of faith he is thankful for all his blessings and gets his inspiration from his vast experiences.” Jerry is a partner in the Phoenix-based real estate and sports-management firm, JDM Partners. CDA’s luxury homes reveal many styles. “We do not have a ‘style’ per se. We have had the opportunity to design homes from classic Traditional to Transitional to ultra-Contemporary,” Candelaria explains. “Our homes are more about our tagline, ‘Inspiring Living,’ than they are about a particular style. We want our clients’ lives and way of living to be enhanced, no matter the style. That is our mission.” Accomplished: In Paradise Valley, the Clemmensen-Gerdts/McKinney Residence is Warm Modern, inspired by the Hamptons on Long Island, and, just a few years ago, the highest reselling home ever in Arizona, at $21 million; the Lange Residence, a Contemporary-style home set between landmark Mummy and Camelback mountains, which the owners climbed in their youth; and the Johnson residence, sensitively etched in the Phoenix Mountains hillside so the owners could enjoy the cityscape, in particular, the planes approaching Sky Harbor International Airport. “The Candelaria Style is more about living and how our homes enhance the way our clients want to live in their own unique way. What inspires them, how they live, how do they want their home to impact and change their life? That is our goal and mission with every home we design and to do what we need to get to know and understand our client, and that takes time and personal commitment,” he explains. “We are not about producing a quick set of plans; we are about creating a home that embodies a living legacy.” Each design is experientially based, from clients’ lives and his. “We do everything possible to ensure that a home communicates the spirit of those who will live in it.” Just in 2022, he and his wife Isabel, principal of Earth & Images interior design in Phoenix, visited Machu Picchu in Peru, the Mosque-Cathedral in Córdoba, the Royal Palace in Madrid, the Duomo in Siena and the Metropolitan Museum in New York, among other landmarks. “They have all proved to be beyond anything depicted on a few pages of a magazine or social media,” he says. In addition to planning annual tours to Spain and Italy, Candelaria Design recently added an Oregon Wine Tour and is scheduling a Tour d’France in 2023. “All of my clients inspire me, too, as they have traveled the world, and their vision and dreams stimulate me to work with and collaborate with them and our team to realize these dreams,” says Candelaria. “Each project is a unique adventure and journey.” n www.candelariadesign.com, @candelariadesign Clemmensen-Gerdts/McKinney Residence Johnson Residence 202 3 EDITION 28 INARIZ ONA 40 YEARS OF STYLE BY DAVID M.
