The Benefits of Yin Yoga: Mental, Emotional & Physical Harmony  https://www.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com/health-and-fitness/spa-wellness/the-benefits-of-yin-yoga-mental-emotional-physical-harmony/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-benefits-of-yin-yoga-mental-emotional-physical-harmony https://www.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com/health-and-fitness/spa-wellness/the-benefits-of-yin-yoga-mental-emotional-physical-harmony/#respond Thu, 07 Mar 2024 17:19:07 +0000 https://www.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com/health-and-fitness/?p=9349

Imagine a practice so serene that it invites you to pause, breathe and delve into the depths of stillness. Yin Yoga, with its roots deeply embedded in Chinese and Taoist traditions, is the embodiment of such tranquility.

Unlike the dynamic sequences of Vinyasa or the powerful poses of Power Yoga, Yin Yoga is the art of stillness. It’s where each pose is a moment of introspection, a gentle stretch of the deeper connective tissues and a pathway to enhanced breath awareness. Yin Yoga is not merely a physical practice but a journey towards inner calm, increased mindfulness and a deeper connection with oneself.

Yin Yoga is your haven from the hustle and bustle, a practice that complements the vigorous activities of life with its slow, meditative approach. This practice is not about building heat or breaking a sweat; it’s about cooling down, grounding and nurturing your body and soul. Each posture, held for minutes per stretch, becomes a mirror reflecting your inner self, revealing tensions and patterns that gently guide you toward release and relaxation.

Three Pillars of Yin Yoga

At the heart of Yin Yoga are three fundamental principles that serve as guideposts on your journey to inner peace:

1. Find Your Edge – Yin Yoga celebrates individuality, recognizing that each body is unique. It encourages you to explore postures to a depth that feels right for you, honoring your body’s needs and limitations on any given day.

2. Resolve to Remain Still – Embracing stillness in Yin Yoga allows for a deeper impact on the connective tissues, fostering a profound sense of calm and centeredness. This principle challenges you to resist the urge to fidget, to truly be present in the moment.

3. Hold for Time – The magic of Yin Yoga unfolds in the duration of the hold. As you maintain a pose, you give your body the time it needs to open up, allowing your fascia to stretch and your mind to silence.

The Transformative Benefits of Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga is more than just a series of poses; it’s a gateway to a myriad of benefits that extend beyond the mat. Physically, it targets the connective tissues, enhancing flexibility and joint mobility and promoting the health of the fascia. Yin Yoga is also a powerful tool for mental and emotional well-being. It teaches patience, resilience and the art of letting go, reducing stress and anxiety and fostering a deep sense of peace.

This practice is a balm for the soul, a momentary escape from the relentless pace of life, offering a space to breathe, to feel and to simply be. Yin Yoga invites participants to slow down, connect with the present and find balance in the yin and yang of our existence.

Embracing Yin Yoga in Your Life

Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or new to the practice, Yin Yoga is accessible to all. It’s the perfect complement to an active lifestyle, offering balance and restoration. As you step onto the mat, you enter a world of stillness, a space where time slows down and the journey inward begins.Interested in taking a Yin Yoga class?

What is BioHacking? https://www.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com/health-and-fitness/spa-wellness/what-is-biohacking/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=what-is-biohacking https://www.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com/health-and-fitness/spa-wellness/what-is-biohacking/#respond Wed, 01 Jun 2022 07:00:00 +0000 https://www.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com/health-and-fitness/?p=9042 By Dr. Soffia Palsdottir PsyD, Chief Clinical Psychologist at Mental Health Center of America

Biohacking leverages individual biology aimed at improving performance, health, and wellbeing through strategic interventions and without using traditional medicine. In the broadest sense, biohacking refers to any practices aimed at optimizing your physical and mental health by following simple healthy lifestyle guidelines such as getting enough sleep, eating clean, exercising, etc. to more advanced practices including blood work evaluations, hormone therapy, cryotherapy, and neurofeedback.

As with everything, different biohacking techniques will appeal to different people. But as a beginner, it’s important to get the basics right in terms of your diet, sleep, and lifestyle before you move on to the advanced practices.

And as technology and research for technical biohacking becomes more available, when coupled with the knowledge and support of medical professionals, biohacking has the opportunity to decrease stress, anxiety, inflammation, and depression while increasing clarity, energy, sleep, motivation, and happiness.

According to Forbes Magazine some common biohacking techniques, like meditation and intermittent fasting, have been around since ancient times.

Why do people want to hack their bodies? Some do it because they don’t feel well and want to go beyond traditional medicine to address mental and physical health concerns. Others want to use engineering to explore unconventional ideas and have full control over their own bodies.

Still, others do it because they want to try to halt the aging process and generally improve their quality of life. Whatever your reason, biohacking is best done under the care of a quality health care team. At MHCA, our BioMed program is uniquely designed to support your treatment goals and overall mental health needs. To get started today visit mentalhealthcenter.com.

Dr. Clark with a patient at Scottsdale Dental Excellence

Guest post by Jeffrey D. Clark, DDS

A good cosmetic dentist is much more than just a dentist. They’re artists who can work with you to sculpt your perfect smile but also doctors who ensure a healthy foundation. All of the cosmetic treatments available to patients in Scottsdale are elective, and together with your cosmetic dentist, you can develop an individualized smile makeover plan that provides you many benefits.

Attractiveness

Smiles help make great first impressions, and a bad smile can undermine an otherwise great look. Through cosmetic dentistry, you can enjoy a smile that’s uniform, bright white, and perfect for your face.

Body Image and Self-Esteem

How others see you is informed very much by how you see yourself. If you feel good about your smile, you’ll smile bigger and more often and enjoy a higher quality of life because of it.

Oral Health

Imperfect teeth can be more than just a cosmetic issue. They often cause headaches and jaw pain. Defects can make it harder to chew, and they can be more difficult to clean.

Permanent Improvements

Most of the cosmetic treatments available to Scottsdale residents result in lasting change. Such improvements are worth investing in since you’ll reap the benefits for the rest of your life.

Fast Recovery Time

Many patients delay cosmetic treatments because they fear daily disruptions. But cosmetic dentistry has evolved greatly in recent years, and many people return to work the same day with no discomfort.

Which Cosmetic Treatments Are Right for You?

The ideal treatments for you depend on your current oral health and your preferences and goals for your smile. Scottsdale residents should consult with their cosmetic dentist to consider the following and other treatments.

  • Teeth whitening can overcome stains and other discoloration.
  • Clear aligners can correct crookedness, gaps, overcrowding, and more.
  • Porcelain veneers can enhance tooth color, shape, and size.
  • Same-day dental crowns are a great way to restore damaged teeth.
  • Dental implants are the preferred way to replace missing teeth.

How Does Diet & Nutrition Impact Mental Health? https://www.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com/health-and-fitness/spa-wellness/how-does-diet-and-nutrition-impact-mental-health/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=how-does-diet-and-nutrition-impact-mental-health https://www.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com/health-and-fitness/spa-wellness/how-does-diet-and-nutrition-impact-mental-health/#respond Tue, 03 May 2022 13:00:00 +0000 https://www.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com/health-and-fitness/?p=9002 By Dr. Soffia Palsdottir PsyD, Chief Clinical Psychologist at Mental Health Center of America

Most people are aware of how the food we eat impacts our physical health and waistline, however fewer realize the impact nutrition has on our brain function and mental health. Your brain requires fuel to function. The brain gets its fuel from the foods we consume. The types of nutrition we supply our brain with has a direct impact on how well the brain functions and impacts our mood and mental health. When our diet is not optimal (e.g. rich in processed food, refined sugar, simple carbohydrates) it can promote inflammation and oxidative stress and worsen symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Symptoms of depression, anxiety, ADHD, insomnia, fatigue and even dementia, and brain fog can be positively impacted by lifestyle and dietary changes. Individuals who have not been able to obtain adequate or full symptom relief through more traditional therapies such as psychotropic medication and therapy, may be able to significantly boost their function and improve their mood with healthier food options and exercise

Small changes in our lifestyle can lead to big changes in our mood and overall wellbeing. Start by making small, manageable changes and pay attention to how what you eat makes you feel. A good place to start is decreasing consumption of foods that are known to cause inflammation such as processed foods (e.g. processed meat, fast food, chips) and refined sugar and increase consumption of vegetables, clean protein and berries, nuts and seeds. Gradually increasing daily physical activity is an evidenced based approach to decrease anxiety and depression and increase overall well-being. Try to aim for 30 minutes of physical activity a day.

Heat and cold exposure such as infrared light and cold plunge or cryotherapy can boost your chance further of improving mood and anxiety. Heat and cold therapy can produce a feeling of invigoration and calm and increase production of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and dopamine and support the mitigation of mental health symptoms such as depression and anxiety.

Most people, at one point or another, struggle with mental health concerns. Too many people unfortunately endure needless suffering for a long time rather than seek professional help. When you feel you have thoughts, emotions, or behaviors that are overwhelming and you struggle to manage, or are facing a life challenge that is painful, seeking mental health services can help you gain back a sense of control and significantly improve your overall well-being and functionality.

Is Neurofeedback Therapy Right for You? https://www.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com/health-and-fitness/spa-wellness/is-neurofeedback-therapy-right-for-you/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=is-neurofeedback-therapy-right-for-you https://www.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com/health-and-fitness/spa-wellness/is-neurofeedback-therapy-right-for-you/#respond Wed, 13 Apr 2022 18:03:10 +0000 https://www.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com/health-and-fitness/?p=8980 By Dr Ryan House PsyD

Neurofeedback is a therapeutic intervention and technology that can help your brain waves work together in a more balanced way. Neurofeedback helps patients to improve their neuroregulation and stability and modify brain patterns that may have implications in mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, ADD/ADHD, and Traumatic Brain Injury. It is a non-invasive method that has little to no side effects.

During neurofeedback, session sensors are placed on your scalp, typically the forehead. You will feel little to no discomfort during the session. These sensors measure electrical activity in the brain and generate an Electroencephalogram or EEG. Your brain will then interact with a computer and software and based on your brain activity; the signal is sent back to the brain that causes a change in your dominant brainwaves. This disrupts the brain that is “stuck” in certain ways of functioning and allows the brain to reorganize at more optimal ways of functioning. Like when you reboot your frozen computer neurofeedback can help get you out of stuck, unhealthy brain patterns.

Each neurofeedback session lasts about 30 minutes. Treatment usually takes 15-20 sessions; however, many patients feel improvements from the very first session.

Neurofeedback has been shown to be efficacious in the treatment of certain psychological problems such as depression, anxiety, panic, insomnia, and ADHD/ADD. Additionally, Neurofeedback can improve your cognitive performance and enhance attention, memory, and learning.

Call Mental Health Center of America today to schedule your first session at (602) 704-2345 or visit www.mentalhealthcenter.com.

Brett Lane was at the top of his game growing his Search Engine Optimization company, when, in 2019, he was diagnosed with melanoma on his neck. It was only the size of a dime to the eye, but the surgeons had to take out much more since the cancer was spreading to his lymphatic system.

When he was diagnosed, he dove into the world of alternative health and found he could do more and really ‘optimize his health’. He started on peptide therapies that fight free radicals, learned about hormone therapy, natural anti-inflammatories, and other protocols for his immune system. In the end, he did not have to do chemo or radiology.

Then in May of 2021, he contracted Covid. By then, he had learned a lot about his health options and started on various peptides to fight free radicals, antibiotics, and IV drips to boost his immune system to help overcome Covid.

In his marketing business (Engine-ius Marketing), Brett offered SEO and the optimization of a companies internet presence and realized he could take that systematic approach to his health.

At the same time, Brett and his wife Hillary decided to open an anti-aging clinic and decided to do so during the height of the pandemic. Researching the different markets, he found Scottsdale, Arizona, to be one of the most friendly business states and the right call for an anti-aging business.

We feel Scottsdale is a great market, with the interest in health along with The Mayo Clinic and all the orthopedic and plastic surgeons, because this is a synergistic match for all of that. Utilizing our therapies before, during, and after these procedures will create synergy with a persons healing process.

– Brett Lane

Everyone in practice walks the talk; they all follow their protocols even though it isn’t always easy making it to the gym or eating healthy – but they do it, just like we all should.

They opened the doors of XCellR8 Health Clinic on July 1st, 2021. They have been serving Scottsdale and Phoenix residents ever since.

One of the first things people do when visiting XCellR8 Health Clinic is our IV therapy, states Brett, because most people in the desert are dehydrated and just that alone can make them feel better.

We really listen to our patients and hear what their most pressing issues are – so they can optimize their overall health. It sounds simple but the typical American healthcare system doesn’t really listen, they treat the symptoms with a pill rather than look for the root cause. Our goal is to change peoples health and life for the better – holistically.

Top 7 Practices for Improving Oral Hygiene and Dental Health https://www.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com/health-and-fitness/news/top-7-practices-for-improving-oral-hygiene-and-dental-health/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=top-7-practices-for-improving-oral-hygiene-and-dental-health https://www.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com/health-and-fitness/news/top-7-practices-for-improving-oral-hygiene-and-dental-health/#respond Thu, 30 Sep 2021 11:09:34 +0000 https://www.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com/health-and-fitness/?p=8918

Did you know that your dental health is related to your overall health in a significant way? Gum diseases or periodontitis due to poor oral hygiene can potentially damage your endocrine, respiratory, reproductive, and cardiovascular systems. The good news is that oral health issues such as periodontitis are easily preventable by improving dental hygiene.

Regular teeth cleaning and dental hygiene decrease your chances of getting oral diseases. Read on if you are willing to go an extra mile and follow these 7 healthy practices for improving your dental hygiene: –

  1. Brush Your Teeth Thrice a Day

The general trend is to brush your teeth twice a day, i.e., once in the morning and once before sleeping. Adding one more brushing routine between the day can help prevent both bad breath and gum disease. Brushing thrice will not allow food to stick between your teeth and gums and cause cavities. Remember to brush for at least 30 seconds each time.

  1. Use Mouthwash and Sugar-free Gum

Add a mouthwash to your dental cleaning routine for its antibacterial effect. It can kill the bacteria which still remains in your mouth after brushing and flossing. Chewing sugar-free gum also helps in teeth cleaning. The gum stimulates the flow of your saliva. The saliva enriches your teeth with phosphorus ions and calcium, which are beneficial for your enamel.

  1. Avoid Unhealthy Foods and Drinks

Your entire health system largely depends on what you eat. Your dental health is not an exception. Fatty, starchy, and surgery food adversely impact your dental health. And these types of food are hard to clean. Drinks like coffee, sodas, and alcohol are toxic, and they leave stains on your teeth. Thus eat and drink healthy stuff only as far as possible like fruits, veggies, nuts, milk, and water.

  1. Eat Foods That Aids Teeth Cleaning & Whitening

Crunchy and fibrous fruits and veggies scrub your teeth and remove accumulated plaque from their surface. Thus your teeth appear whiter. Some examples of fibrous foods are celery, apple, carrot, and cucumber. Many fibrous vegetables help generate vitamin A in your body, which is essential for strong teeth.

  1. Visit Your Dentist Regularly

It is not wise to visit your dentist only if you experience a dental health issue. You must regularly go for your dental check-up. Preventive dental care can treat minor issues before they become complicated. You should also opt for a professional dental cleaning to get rid of accumulated tartar and plaque as and when your dentist suggests.

  1. Avoid Sugary & Acidic Foods

Sugary foods give rise to cavities in your mouth. Sugar also gets converted into acid, which is not suitable for the enamel of your teeth. Similarly, acidic fruits and drinks like citrus fruits, sour gummies, candies, coffee, and carbonated flavored beverages contribute to enamel erosion. Try to avoid these kinds of acidic and sugary foods as much as you can.

  1. Floss Regularly

Flossing is not a favorite activity for many people. But it has incredible benefits. Flossing helps remove leftover food particles from between the teeth. It prevents bacteria and plaque generation in the mouth, resulting in tooth decay or periodontitis. Flossing also prevents bad breath due to food particles stuck in your teeth.
