Houzz, the home renovation company, released a report identifying this summer’s emerging home design trends. The report was based on the latest search insights from their community of homeowners, design enthusiasts and industry professionals.
According to the report, this season’s trends reflect a desire to bring a sense of calm into a home and a desire to make bold statements. Houzz also saw a growing interest in creating dedicated spaces within the home for leisure activities for children and adults.
Here are the top summer home design trends as identified by Houzz:
Dark & Moody
The search for dark and moody decor is increasing in popularity. Searches for “moody living room” and “moody kitchen” have doubled compared to 2023. Houzz claims it is likely because bright whites and light greys have dominated interiors in recent years. “Dark ceiling” searches have increased by 60% compared to last summer.
Japanese Influence
The Japanese influence trend at its core embraces simplicity, natural elements and harmonious living spaces. Houzz noted that there has been a resurgence of searches related to kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. Searches for “Japandi living room,” which relates to a hybrid design style that merges Japanese minimalism with Scandinavian functionality have risen by 48%. Searches for “zen garden” were also up by 22%.
Kid Zones
Creating kid’s spaces allows kids to feel ownership within the home. The search term “race car bed” soared by 106%. Other kid and tween searches, such as “teen lounge,” “tween bedroom,” “kids gaming bedroom,” “bean bag” and “jack-and-jill bathroom,” have all jumped in search traffic when compared to the previous year.
Leisure Spaces
Houzz reports that there is an increased interest in creating spaces of leisure within homes. Both outdoor and indoor activities have reached a search increase. Searches such as “listening room, “living room piano,” “bocce court,” “bowling alley” and “gaming room” have all dramatically increased within the past year.
Organic Modern Style
This summer, Houzz reported that searches for “organic modern bedroom” jumped nearly 3.5 times year after year. Pictured at top, organic modern design elements include a mix of sleek lines and crisp white and neutral-colored surfaces contrasted with natural forms and materials. More “organic modern” searches have skyrocketed over the past year including dining rooms, kitchens, bathrooms and living rooms.
Reading Rooms
Adding reading corners to spaces brings both design and functionality to a room. Searches for terms like “library wall,” “reading corner” and “book nook” have skyrocketed. “Dark academia” is often associated with reading, writing and learning. Houzz reported that the search for “dark academia” jumped by 219% over the past year.
Wellness
It’s time to relax. At least that’s the common search on Houzz in the wellness department. Searches for “cold plunge,” “indoor sauna,” “home spa” and “backyard sauna rose in the first quarter of the year. Another popular search in the wellness category is searches for “large windows” and “skylights.” Bringing natural light into spaces helps maintain the body’s intrinsic system.
